General Information

The PGY-2 Critical Care Residency at Emory University Hospital is an ASHP accredited, one-year specialty program designed to provide the resident with exposure to diverse populations of critically ill patients. The primary emphasis of the residency is to develop clinicians with expertise in the care of critically ill patients. To achieve this goal, the resident functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary critical care team to attain practical clinical experience. Through patient data collection and analysis, the resident develops the knowledge and skills to provide patient-specific and evidence-based pharmacotherapy and function as an independent practitioner. In addition, valuable leadership and research skills are developed through participation in a critical care related interdisciplinary committee and completion of a clinical research project. Working closley with the Emory Center for Critical Care, the resident gains exposure to a variety of critical care topics, patients and providers from all disciplins.  The resident is encouraged to take advantage of the many professional writing, teaching, and precepting opportunities available during the course of the year.  The opportunity to work with two former Presidents of the Society of Critical Care Medicine furter enhances the professional network of the resident.  These activities provide a solid foundation in critical care pharmacotherapy while enabling the resident to pursue individual interests.

Goalscpsccm2013

It is our goal to train our residents to have a strong critical care clinical knowledge base, commitment to teaching, and appreciation for clinical research. The critical care specialty residency program at Emory Healthcare utilizes the collective assets of Emory Hospitals and the Emory Center for Critical Care in the education and training of residents in the following areas:

Clinical practice: Residents will become familiar with disease states, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of critically ill patients. Residents will learn how to incorporate their clinical knowledge into day-to-day practice and how to function independently as a member of the healthcare team.

Teaching: Residents will be involved in teaching PGY1 pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, physicians, nurses, as well as other members of the healthcare team.

Research: Residents will learn how to develop and conduct a clinical research. Institutional research board approval will be obtained.

Others: Residents will utilize practice management skills to promote rational and safe use of medications; residents will master personal development skills for life-long learning and professional growth.
