Sherman Library & Gardens presents Library Lecture: The Persuasive Past of Orange Canton on Tuesday, May 17 from two-3 p.m. Join Jill Thrasher, Library Director, for a closer look at the Sherman drove of historic brochures, booklets, and pamphlets used to promote the cities of Orange County. For more than 100 years, Orange County cities accept worked hard to lure new residents to set down roots in Southern California. Cities created brochures, booklets, pamphlets, and other advertisements that promised rich soil, plentiful h2o, land-of-the-art roads and rail lines, all set within a perfect climate for both agriculture and leisure. They as well offered affordable housing, cute beaches, dark-green parks, skilful schools, modern libraries, new museums and many other local attractions. Often, the cities' publicity materials would highlight the ease of travel to the desert, mountains, or beaches. Filled with photographs, maps, and artwork to highlight the cities' greatest qualities, these circulars show Orange Canton'southward transition from farmlands, to oil fields, to major metropolitan areas. Many of these advertisements have been lost to time. Sherman Library is fortunate to take a robust collection of such items in its archives. Enjoy a guided interpretive two-hour Almost Total Moon Hike at Crystal Cove State Park to explore the twinkling stars and the dark sky on Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.k. A park naturalist volition lead hikers on this moderate to difficult four-mile loop trail with uneven terrain and a steep uphill climb. We encourage you to bring your own supplies including buckets and bags to help reduce plastic bag usage.
